why buy handmade?
All of my pottery is handmade in a tiny corner of my garage in the coastal town of San Luis Obispo, CA. They’re one-of-a-kind pieces, varying slightly (sometimes more than others) in size, shape and color. I find these variations fascinating and find it difficult to settle on a single favorite angle.
When purchasing clay, glazes, and most of my tools I source locally. The various clays I use are from California-based companies and purchased either from a bulk supplier in town or a second supplier just a few hours away. I purchase most of the glazes that I pour, dip, or brush onto my pieces from a bulk supplier in Northern California while only a few are from out of state. A goal is to eventually fire my pottery in a kiln using renewable energy, but this isn’t yet an option for me.
Purchasing any of these handmade ceramics does much good for the community - you participate in supporting the small businesses that supply my materials, you support me, an individual artist promoting and carrying on an age-old tradition that brings people joy, and you also gain a unique piece of functional art to be enjoyed daily for a long, long time.
Thank you for your contribution to this exciting and often surprising process, where diversity is valued, utility is art, and to use is to enjoy.
